WHEREAS, no other nation in the world has such a diverse population and it is this diversity and the contributions of men, women, and children that will sustain the nation's character and strength into the future;
WHEREAS, this is and has been a nation of immigrants, each year welcoming hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children from different countries, races, and religious backgrounds from around the world;
WHEREAS, there are six nationally designated history and heritage months that recognize the important contributions of the many diverse segments of the population, but no single established period that reaches out to everyone and recognizes all the diversity in the nation's workplaces, schools, and communities;
WHEREAS, our growing multiculturalism, the global economy, and the threat of terrorism make it more important than ever for all of us to bridge differences in order to achieve our common goals in our workplaces, schools, and communities;
WHEREAS, encouraging and appreciating diversity in thought and perspective and building cultures of inclusiveness immeasurably strengthens our workplaces, schools, and communities;
NOW AND THEREFORE, let us officially proclaim Celebrate Diversity Month to be recognized each April from here forward. We call on all organizations, communities, and citizens to set aside time each April to honor and participate in activities that build bridges of understanding and acceptance across differences.
